CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Neighbourhood refers to an inhabited area delineated by social and physical boundaries. A neighbourhood study is a detailed study carried out to obtained as many facts as possible about people and their environment in general. When using the term “Neighbourhood” in the context of where we live, it is usually referencing more than just a geographical location, but rather a collective of all the elements that go into making it what it is, especially the people. It also entails in-depth study, analysis and research of the inhabitants of a given community ranging from their culture, attitude, customs and traditional values which embodies their general way of life. A neighbourhood is a geographically localized community within a large city, town, suburban or rural area. Neighbourhoods are often social communities with considerable face-to-face interaction among members. Researchers have not agreed on an exact definition, but the following may serve as a starting point. The neighbourhood is generally defined spatially as a specific geographic area and functionally as a set of social networks. Neighbourhood study, then, are the spatial units in which face-to-face social interactions occur - the personal settings and situations where residents seek to realized common values, socialize youth, and maintain effective social control.
Importance of the Study
The study helps health workers to be acquainted with the people of the community, work pleasingly with them, assess and identify their area of needy thereby. Planning a better health came to deliver for the community
Origin of the people (Historical)
The people of Ikot Ukpong in Nto Obio Akpan family in Ekpeyong I, in Ekpeyong Atai clan in Essien Udim L.G.A of Akwe Ibom State. Historical has been that this family extracted from Nto Obio Akpan in Ekpeyong Atai clan in 1985. This brought about the conflict between the people of Ikt Ukpong and Nto Obio Akpan. People over the site of a pipe born water sited, at Urua Ofiong Etoh. Ikot Ukpong is made up of three families namely Nto Ottong, Nto Akpan Inyang Ntuen and Nto Akeng families.
Location and boundaries
Ikot Ukpong is located in Ekpeyong Atai clan, in Essien Udim Local government Area. Ikot Ukpong shares a common boundary with Nto Usoh east, Ikot Onko south, Ikot Udo Essen Owo North, Urung Uso Awan west.
Vegetation/Geography
The landmass consist of undulating plains the family has no river. The soil of Ikot Ukpong has a sample pattern of a sedimentary geological formation; this consist of the main sands of tertiary coastal plains.
Climate
The climate of Ikot Ukpong regions lie in the tropic and consist of two seasons the dry and rainy seasons.
