THE EFFECT OF OVERCROWDING IN CLASSROOM SETTING ON STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
According to the dictionary of education “class is a number of persons or things regarded as belonging together because of common attributes, qualities or traits. It is a group of pupils or students who are taught and students together. It is a meeting of a group of students for turtious. A classroom is said to be overcrowded in which the number of students exceed. The optimum level such that it causes hindrance in the teaching and learning process. The classroom is the most important area within a school. The student spend most of the time in an environment conducive to learning to the entire design of classroom reflects the priorities, goals, philosophy, personality and teaching style of the students. Student learning behaviour can be enhanced when teachers takes time to create a classroom climate in which adolescence feel comfortable with their teachers and peer. But unfortunately in our country the classrooms are overcrowded.
The condition of government school all over the country and quantity of education being imparted have become a matter of concern to stakeholder in the education sector. Government and the concerned education department are most exercising balance over quality of education. Government schools are due to the limitation of the economic resources and budget constraints.
Focusing on the effect of this very serious problems prevailing in our country one thing is very clear that teaching in such an environment where the number of students is not possible.
Shah and Imamullah (2012) found from their studies that overcrowding classes could have a direct impact on students learning. They not only affected students performance but also, put stress on teachers and increase school dropout rate of students.
The effect of classroom selling on student has been a perplexing one for education studies have found that the physical environment class. Overcrowding and teaching methods are all variables that student achievement (Molnar, et al, 2000). Other factor that affect students achievement are school crowding and classroom setting (General 210-Swift 2000). The issues of poor academic performance of students in Nigeria has been of much concern to all and sundry the problems is so much that it has led to the define in standard of education. It is thereforeimportant to examine the effect of overcrowding in classroom setting on student academic performance.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Uganda has put measures to improve the quality of education in secondary schools, but the performance of students in the West African Examination Council (WAEC) is still poor in the majority of districts (New vision, 20093). In addition the schools inspectorate department in most districts is found to be lacking in vigilance to uphold education standards. Some schools are never inspected not even once in the entire school year.
School inspector attribute this to increased work load and insufficient resources. By nature inspection is more reactive than proactive, since schools with problems are prioritized. As a result of education standard, especially in the rural area suffer a decline because of poor or lack of school (Transparency, 200934).
What students learn, how much effort they put into it and the nature of their learning is determined for most by the extent and nature of the assessment. They expect to receive Gibbs and Simson as cited in first UQ Assessment brief (2009;1), summarizes the impact assessment when they mention “it is assumed the assessment has an overwhelming influence on what, how and how much students study
