CHAPTER ONE
1.0INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND AND NEED FOR THE POINT OF INQUIRY
The pursuit and attainment of healthy living in the home is the foundation for physical, mental, emotional and social health. According to Schifferes (1963), there are no special or magic formula for healthier living but sensible actions and precautions which are based on sound and reasonable formation. Sensible action and precautions allow a person to live longer, healthier and happily without taking any undue or extraordinary care of one’s health.
The school owes it a responsibility to the children entrusted to its care to help them maintain their physical, emotional and social health through the inculcation of appropriate sex/knowledge, attitudes and behaviours. All health concepts can be treated at the level of the child, and with the advancement in years while in school he can grow in knowledge which will shape his attitude and behaviour for both the present and the future.
The solution is the teaching of reflective thinking in the classroom. Among the teaching models would include the Socratic method of envisioning and the story telling approach. The teacher should inculcate in the children the thirst for knowledge through the use of the community of inquiry approach that emphasize higher order thinking.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Many youths in Nigeria are suffering today due to ignorance about sex and sexuality. This has caused backwardness and deficiency in manpower development. A lot of people are end up becoming school drop-outs, single mothers, drug addicts, HIV patients and eventually live unfulfilled life. All these difficulties are as a result of poor and non-qualitative education that young people get towards value oriented learning. This study addresses the issue.
1.3 SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY
The study would be of a strong benefit to the students. The introduction of realistic thinking in the secondary section is the path to their self realization. This would entail that the products of this great reformation would be free from the schedule patterns of learning that colonizes and dehumanizes. The outcome of this work would serve as boost to the freedom of the learners who would be made to reason through realistic thinking in place of memorizing through rote-learning and cramming of the pre-determined learning outcome.
Finally, this study would be a boost to the development of moral functional and personnel development in Nigeria. The outcome could be a pointer to the reasons behind the kind of life that our school leavers are living. Realistic Thinking creates room for reflection and this is the path to deeper understanding of phenomena. The improvement of the secondary section is the improvement of the over all facts of the society.
1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study would x-ray the meaning of realistic thinking, and how applicable is realistic thinking in addressing the issues of premarital sex among secondary schools students.
