CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.8    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control one another intimate partner. It is any act committed within the family by one of its members, which seriously impairs the life and psychological well-being or liberty of another family member. Domestic violence has been identified as an issue of violence against Nigerian women which had to be at a high rate (Eze Anaba, 2010).

In a report more than two-fifth of women (43%) and almost one-third of men (30%) agree that a husband is justified in beating his wife for certain reasons, (National demographic and health survey (NDHs), 2015. Domestic violence is an intentional and persistent abuse of anyone in the home in a way that causes pain, distress, or injury (Eze Anaba, 2010). According to Heise (2014), violence against spouses occurs in all social and economic classes, but couples with low socio-economic status are more likely to experience violence. As noted by Abama and kwaya (2014), more research is needed to fully understand the connections between poverty and domestic violence. Men in difficult economic circumstances such as unemployment, little job automy, low socio-economic status or blocked advancement due to lack of education may resort to violence as a result  of frustration and sense of hopelessness, a condition  due to displacement in psychoanalysis, may or may not have direct physical attack resulting to infliction  of physical injuries, there may also be verbal attack, aggression, use of derogatory languages, domineering behaviour as well as use of force to have sexual relationship with the wife, (Gamy, 2012). It is observed that the magnitude of domestic violence is concealed because women are usually reluctant to report cases of abuse or assault by their husband even if they sustain serious injuries, pain or even emotional damage, most of them are simply quiet and continue to live under disguise of not having a problematic marriage, others would term it a private matter and most times, attempt by women to report incident of abuse and assault by their husband complicates matters. (Anaba, 2010).

Birdsall (2014), posits that poor spouse who experience violence may have fewer resources to escape violence at home. In Nigeria, domestic violence is believed to be a family or home affair. Just like in other part of the world example Zambia, all forms of domestic violence are employed to gain and maintain control over the victim, deploy it against partners (Shigas 2017). Violence is a major obstacle to growth and development, it is estimated that one in every five women face some form of violence during their life time and some cases lead to injury or death (Anaba, 2010).The aim of this study is to investigate socio-economic status and domestic violence among couples in Obio Offot, Uyo Local Government Area. The findings of the study will bring a positive change among couples in our community.

1.9    STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

It could be very fatal; women are both intentionally murdered by their partners and some of them lose their lives as a result of injuries inflicted on them. In Nigeria, 58.9% of women reported battery during pregnancy, while 21.3% are force to have sexual intercourse, (Okemgbo, Omideyi and Odimagwu, 2016). As observed by the researcher during her community health experience in Obio Offot Community, Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Socio-economic status has been the leading factor for domestic violence among couples of such factors includes; frustration, unemployment. It was also observed by the researcher, women were mostly affected in the community. Most of these women were severely injured and were admitted in Obio Offot health centre while some were psychologically depressed and were referred to psychiatric hospital for further management.
