CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Physical exercise is one of the most important activities necessary for man’s fitness and health. But it is quite unfortunate that it is the most neglected. This neglect has resulted in to increase in body failure sickness, and so on.
People who participate in moderate-high levels of physical exercise have a lower mortality rate compared to individuals who by comparison are not physically active. (DHHS. 1996).
It is recorded that only around one in 10 Australians over the age of 50 exercises enough to gain any cardiovascular benefit. Some estimates suggest that about half of the physical decline associated with old age may be due to a lack of physical activity. It has also been suggested that people over the age of 65, more than any other age group, require adequate fitness levels to help them maintain independence, recover from illness and reduce their high risk of disease. (Victoria 2018).
It is also noted that without regular exercise, people over the age of 50 years can experience a range of health problems including; Reduced muscle mass strength and physical endurance, reduced coordination and balance, reduced joint flexibility and mobility, etc. (Google 2018).
All illness illustrations show the great importance of exercise on the health of both old and young ministers. A lack of physical activity causes approximately 6% of the burden of disease from coronary heart disease, 7% of type 2 diabetes, 10% of breast cancer, and 10% of colon cancer worldwide. Overall, physical inactivity causes 9% of premature mortality worldwide. (Lee. et al. 2012).
“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promises for both the present and the life to come”. (1 Timothy 4:8 New International Version NIV) “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own”. I Corinthians 6:19. New Living Translation, NIV.
From the above citation, we see that God himself is in support of physical exercise because he wants us to be healthy.
Physical exercise has some profits in our bodies which will be discussed deeply in this study, and our bodies are made to be taken care; because the spirit of God dwells in our bodies. Therefore, if the body is not taken appropriate care of, it can be damaged and may not be in good health. For this reason, the spirit of God may depart from both the old and young ministers because He cannot dwell in a damaged body.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
It is estimated that in the united states approximately 7.3% of the adult population has an anxiety disorder that necessitates some form of treatment (Regier et al. 1988). This challenge has its foundation as a result of a lack of adequate exercise. Due to the increase of diseases and early death of old and young ministers, researchers have discovered that the major factor contributing to this is lack of physical exercise.
These problems have revealed the urgent need for more research in physical exercise and health care through ministers.
1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purposes or objectives of this study are:
1. To explain the role played or effect of physical exercise on the health of both old and young ministers.
2. To verify whether there are factors that enhance or hinder physical exercise on old and young ministers.
3. To ascertain if there are efforts made to encourage physical exercise on old and young ministers.
4. To recommend ways through which the young and old ministers can improve their health.
1.4 SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY
This study is of great importance to the researcher. Being a young minister, this research work enlightens his eyes on the benefits of exercise and the procedures to adopt for effective physical exercise.
Through this study, old ministers who think that exercise is for young ministers, and that exercise has no effect on old people, will learn that exercise has a greater benefit on old ministers than to start exercising themselves.
The Church, ministries, and the society at large have a lot to benefit from this research work in the sense that it provides some solutions and recommendations which it old and young ministers will adapt to them, will reduce the high rate of diseased people, and solve the issue of premature death that occurs as a result of negligent to exercise.
1.5 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
These research questions derived from the purpose of this study. These questions are designed to guide this research work, and they are;
1. What effect does physical exercise has on the health of the old and young ministers?
2. Are there factors that enhance or hinder physical exercise for young and old ministers?
3. Are there efforts made by the government, ministry, ministers, etc to encourage physical exercise on the old and young ministers?
4. What are some other ways that can help to improve physical exercise for the old and young ministers?
1.6 SCOPE/ LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The scope of this study centered on both old and young ministers. Due to the urgent and constant growth of Christianity, several churches are coming up day by day. For this reason, it has lead to the increase of ministers; as every church has atlases, one pastor. From observation, there are several churches that are operating without registration, that is they have not identified themselves with the government agency. Since all Churches are not registered, this makes it difficult to state the number of Churches in the society. And if the number of Churches cannot be determined, the number of ministers both old and young cannot be determined also. Therefore, this study focuses on ministers both old and young everywhere, since the effect of exercise is the same on every minister and young minister everywhere in the world.
This study has limitations. This research would have been more perfect than this, but it has been limited by time, finance, materials pages, and citation.
By the time, the researcher means that the time given to deliver this work was not enough regarding the nature of the research. To accurately deliver this work, a minimum of four months would have been given to the researcher. Therefore, the limited time factor has done great harm to the delivery of this work.
The researchers also see lack of finance as one of the limitations. The materials to do good and accurate research work are the product of finance. This study lack enough finance to conduct the work.
Due to lack of finance, this leads to another limitation which is lack of materials. No research is well conducted without adequate and enough materials. Lack of enough literature to review also hinders the study.
By pages and citation, the researcher speaks of the numbers of pages and citation as very little as long as this study is a concern. The researcher was instructed to limit the pages of the work between 15 to 20 pages and citation. Due to this limitation, there are a lot of things and materials that would have made the work more elaborate but were avoided in order to abide by the rules.
However, despite these limitations, the researcher has been able to break through and complete this study successfully. The researcher was also able to meet the requirement and deliver the work in time.
1.7 DEFINITION OF TERM
Health: It is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (WHO 2006).
Physical Exercise: Is defined as any bodies activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health and wellness (Kylason and Cavrov 2011)
A Young Adult: is generally a person ranging in age from their late teens or early twenties to their thirties, although definition and opinions such as Erik Erikson’s stages of human development vary. The young adult stage in human development precedes the middle adulthood stage ages from 40 or 41 to 64 (Martin and Erikson 2016).
Old: (American Psychological Association, 2009) defines old age as ages nearing or surpassing the life expectancy of human beings and is thus the end of the human life cycle. Terms and euphemisms include old people, elderly/ worldwide usage, seniors (American usage), senior citizens (British and American usages), old adult (in social sciences), the elderly, and elders (in many cultures including the cultures of aboriginal people).
A Minister: Is literally, a servant but the word has taken on a broader meaning in religious circles. Today, a Christian minister is seen as someone authorized to conduct religious services. A person, who leads worship services, administrates a church, or conducts weddings, and funerals are considered a Christian minister. Synonymous ministers are clergy and pastor. (Google 2018).
