CHAPTER ONE

1.1 BACKGROUND AND NEEDS OF STUDY

Champion breweries Plc, was incorporated as a private limited Liability Company on the 31st July, 1974 with the same south East breweries limited. The company’s name was changed from south East breweries limited to Cross River Breweries limited until 1999 – 2000, during the creation of Akwa Ibom state in 1987 it was handed over to Akwa Ibom State government and it was call champion breweries limited.

The company was privatized and the name was change to champion breweries Plc on the 1st of September, 1992.

The purpose of this research paper was to identify the basic cause of ill motivation of employee in champion breweries Uyo, It’s from this that solutions can be preferred to enhance effective implementation of its police which the researcher attempts to answer in this research paper is; How does motivation relate with improved organizational productivity?

The need to motivate workers in an organization is the concern of manager of both private and public establishment. There is the need for managers to understand and accommodate various people that work in one organization for the purpose of increasing productivity and for them to attain standard of excellence in any endevour.

Managers in all types of organization are continually faced with the problem of vast differences that exists in their performance or output of and individual workers. Some employees often perform at high level and need little or no supervision and appear to enjoy what they are doing; other employees perform only at marginal levels and require constant attention and direction and are often absent from their duty post.

Douglas Mcaregor describes the assumption made by a manager practicing two opposing leadership styles. The assumption presumed to be made by the Autocratic managers are set out in history example he states that “most people must be corrected, controlled, threatened with punishment to get them fat further adequate effort toward the achievement of organizational objective. “On the other hand, the hands the assumptions presumed to be made by permissive group or democratic manager are grouped into this theory.

Unfortunately, many Nigerian managers and leaders of organizations have a rather shallow view of motivation, for them the task workers motivation is a simple process of just providing monetary welfare to workers. But the researcher proves this wrong, for example did mass wages award lead to motivation of workers? Car allowance, housing and housing loans and subsidized medical care, really changes workers attitude to work? The human relations school of through believes that ability to extract maximum result from human being as important resource in an organization depend on its  solid capacity and not on physical capacity.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

The  management of champion breweries Uyo, branch in particular and other enterprise in Akwa Ibom State in general are continually faced with the problem of vast differences that exist in the performance or output of individual workers some employees often perform at high level and need little or no supervision and appear to enjoy what they are doing; other employees perform only at marginal levels and require constant attention and direction and workers leave organization due to the fact that they are not motivated enough. Some are not willing to leave because they are enjoying some benefit in terms of promotion which leads to increase in salaries and wages, bonuses and some other incentives.

There is need for further research on motivation, therefore my goals is to reveal what it is that motivates all employees to perform attheir best and achieve optimal business results at all times. The inherent problem I have identified is that many employers have attempted several different incentive programs to motivate their employees, yet they have not worked for everyone in the company. This is a major problem faced by employer’s company on the strength of it employees performances, one of the traditional components of management along with planning, organizing and controlling is motivating many managers do different things for example: contests, ranking of people plants, shifts teams and departments performance appraisals performance production, sales quotas and commission pay. All these systems are implemented in the belief that the drive performance.

Some researchers think it does the opposite instead of trying to use extrinsic motivators (something outside of the work itself such as promise rewards of incentives) to get higher levels of performance from people management will be  better served by studying the organization as a system. Employers demand results without result the organization will not survive; managing motivation is requirement for productivity.

Organizations must improve the work performance, productivity, skills and ability of its employees. The problem is how to motivate workers to achieving higher productivity.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The general objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of motivation on workers towards organizations productivity in champion breweries Uyo, branch Akwa Ibom State. However the primary objectives include:

⦁ To find out what motivate employees in champion breweries Uyo and how it motivate them

⦁ To find out whether there is any relationship between motivation and productivity.

⦁ Examine the extent in which the worker of champion breweries benefits from the motivational tools adopted by their management.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTION

1. Is there any relationship between staff incentives and productivity?

2. Can there be increase in productivity as result of conductive working environment?

3. Can adequate staff supervision by management bring about productivity?

Hi: Adequate staff supervision by management cannot bring about productivity.

1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study is based on motivation persuading, stimulating and compelling employee of champion breweries Uyo branch to act in a manner which fulfills the objectives of the organization, data collection and other necessary information will therefore limited to management and employees of the company.

1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The following limitation where encountered:

⦁ True constraint

⦁ Financial constraint

⦁ Short period of carrying out the research

⦁ Attendance of the respondent forwards the research question.

1.8 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDDY

The study is significance for the following reason in spite the importance of the concept management and manager still did not recognize the importance of employee motivation and how it can drastically lead to improved organizational productivity.

Management of champion breweries Uyo, branch particular and other enterprise in Akwa Ibom State in general would found the result emerged from this research work very rewarding and valuable, this is because it would enable them know the particular problems affecting, motivation and thereby take necessary remedial measures to cope with the ugly situation in order to improve productivity.

Furthermore, the ideas and principle relating to employeemotivation from researches conducted outside our country may not necessarily fit us, that is why a study of this nature could establish what the situation is and how to improve on it to fit our society.

Consequently the acceptance of this study and adoption of the researcher as recommendation could assist management in making decision on how employees could be motivated not only security, recognition, good working conditions etc toward improvement of the organizational productivity (non financial and financial incentive).
