1.1 INTRODUCTION
The impact of labour relation in the productivity of an organization. The concept evolves from historical circumstances that accomplished the management revolution in Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The management revolution was accompanied by formalization of work relationship in form of the employment contract that is supposedly entered into the equal of free individuals and those individuals are the workers and the employers.
It is important to note that the two partners involves in this contract are anything unequal. In this circumstances of equality workers is confronted with the fear of unemployment while the employer is interested in profit maximization and because of the possibilities of the life chance of the workers at least in relation to mean of production i.e. their position in the work place, workers find it necessary to organization into trade union to extract and demand their term and condition of work from the employer.
The relationship become formalized with the evolution of trade union which signifies employees concerns as a group about those aspects of work that directly affect them. Recognition of this interest on the part of employer not only ensures relative management peace but also shows that both labour and management are committed to the survival of the enterprise.
This despite the generally adversely characteristic of labour management relationship, the two sides are of necessity expected to co-operate with each other, if for no other reason then the achievement of individual goal, the workers needs the job from which he earns his living and support his family, while management official must ensure a reasonable return or investment to the owner.
The desire to achieve these private goals inevitably induces the two sides to seek the survival of the enterprise.
Quite apart from the participative argument for industrial decision making the worker spends a considerable proportion of his or her day in the work place. In Nigeria, a worker is required to put in a minimum of 8hours a day at work. By this single evidence his interaction at work with co-workers, supervisors and managers is .a crucial importance. This is all the more so since the effects of these interactions go far beyond what happens at the work place. The modern industrial sector worker has therefore come to see the impact of labour relation as the instrument of effective means of achieving improvement in his or her condition of work. The process through which this is achieved is the collective bargaining machinery which gives the workers a right to be heard in industry.
