CHAPTER ONE
Introduction
Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and direct the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. Northouse (2001:3) defined leadership as a process whereby an individual influences a group of individual to achieve a common goal.
An effective leadership is generally someone that leads by example and other people just tend to follow because they believe what they do is the right thing. An effective leader can admit when they are wrong and by doing so, allows people to feel comfortable asking them For help and advice.
Leadership plays a crucial role in an organization on which the demand on the individual employee and demand of the organization are balanced for an organization.
Leadership is the human factor which binds a group together and motivates it towards achieving organizational goals and objectives. An organization without quality leadership will make the employee look like cocoons, it is leadership that will trigger the power of motivation in people and guide them towards organizational goal and objectives. Leadership is the driving force or state or need which inclines a person to behave in a particular manner to develop a capacity of certain types of behavior.
Leadership is defined as the process by which an individual influences another individual or a group to achieve a common goal. Implied that leadership involved the use of interpersonal approaches to techniques with the intention to persuade followers to accept a goal. Once accepted, leaders also motivate followers to engage in the behaviours necessary to achieve the state or condition of the followers, to a future state desired by the leader that can be accompanied by achieving the goal.
When a leader can cause a positive change within an organization, the leader can make positive professional changes. There is difference between a leader and a manager, a manager may be a person that is in control, because they are appointed to a position and that position may have or give them authority. It is that position may have or give them authority. It is more than having technical training and following a list of proper procedures.
Leadership has been as the process of “social influence in which one person can enlist and aid, and support others in the accomplishment of a common task”. It is not out of place repeat here that leadership is the ability to question one’s own behavior.
To be effective, a leader must be self-aware without being egocentric. Those leaders who are egocentric are slave drivers rather than servant leader.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Management is part of the organization, its culture and structure. Leaders and subordinate are both influence by the organizational structure and culture, but leaders probably have a greater possibility to shape and change it. An organization must know who are its outstanding workers, those who need additional training and those not contributing to the efficiency and welfare of the company or organization. Also, performance on the job can be assessed at all levels of employment such as: personal decision relating to promotion, job rotation ,job enrichment etc.And in some ways, such assessment is based on objective and systematic criteria , which includes factors relevant to the person’s ability to perform on the job . Hence, the overall purpose of performance evaluation is to provide an accurate measure of how well a person is performing the task or job assigned to him or her which eventually becomes the basis for decision making concerning the employees future.
However, the incompetence of leaders influence and affects the organization administration negatively. Incompetence in policy making where the leader feels inconsistent in policy making on how best to run the organization. Most Leaders lack administration knowledge and skills needed to run the organization effectively. They forget that the effectiveness of staff depends a great deal on the attitude of management towards them and beyond ethical framework that guards and guides its official conduct.
