COMPUTER LITERACY AND THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS
Abstract
The study is aimed at examining computer literacy and its effectiveness in secondary school teachers in the Itu Local Government Area. The population of the area was one hundred (100) in the study area. A sample size of one hundred (100) teachers was selected from (5) five public secondary schools in the study area using a simple random sampling technique. Three null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. An Instrument titled Computer Literacy Questionnaire (CLQ) was used for data collection. independent test- re-test statistical technique was used to analyze the data collected. Findings revealed that teachers with computer literacy have a significant influence on their student's performance in Itu Local Government Area. Based on the findings, it was recommended among the élites that the government should train and retrained teachers on computer literacy for optimal productivity and results. It was concluded that teachers with computer literacy skills are far better than those without computer literacy skills in Itu Local Government Area. It has an effect and significant influence on the academic performance of their students in their various secondary schools

CHAPTER ONE
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Electronic information systems have shown that they offer great opportunities for teachers and these information help the teachers in various disciplines of recent. The use of electronic information system enable teachers to accesses the necessary information on learning materials through the internet. electronic information system can be defined as the combination of hardware and software used to store the needed information from the external and internal sources (Ozigi, 2009) for more accessible data bases towards the accomplishment of organizational goal (the is the goal of the school). Lawel (2015), electronic information system (els) in education is generally used to introduce teachers to the used and working principles of computer system that enhance teachers’ job effectiveness in their records keeping and teaching learning process in the schools. Electronic information system aids the following, introduction of stimulations and games strategies, computer based instruction administrative effectiveness, school discipline, research publication facilities, and effective teaching learning process, also of recent. Teachers log in to internet websites to help them access necessary information for research and assignments.
Computer can be described as scientific machines that are used to perform tasks or calculation according to set instructions or programs. electronic information system enables the teachers to process, store and disseminate vocal, pictorial, textual and numerical information by electronic based systems. the use of computer by the teachers assist the them in carrying out their works, it helps the teacher to store, display, transmit, and analyze data by the educational researchers, and it is done through computer aided instruction .computer assisted learning. The use of statistical package for social sciences software for advanced statistics aids teachers by overcoming the rigor of manual analysis of primary data. The use of computers enable teachers and students to share and chat through the use of internet. Internet as an electronic library where vast amount of information are provided through different sources and displayed. The use of internet through thee computer enables teachers to access the relevant information needed for teaching and learning. If teacher are very to be effective, computer literacy is crucial. Ozigi (2009) states that the importance of computer literacy in teachers education programs, exposure to changes in the methodologies, curriculum reform and the innovation in the professions. It help teachers in record keeping strategies, and computer assisted instruction and communication.
1.2 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The major aim of computer literacy is to promote the understanding and the effective use of computer with a view to applying knowledge of such understanding among secondary school teachers to real life situation. Computer literacy and its effectiveness has sustain a high understanding of computer by teachers for an enhanced achievement. This has drawn the attention of some educational educators. This problem is not over until they arrive at the most effective way that will promote the understanding of computer with a view to applying the knowledge of such understanding to real teaching (Obene, 2016). Achievement in teaching process has to do with the attainment of instructional objectives. To succeed and attain these set of instructional objectives, a number of teaching methods should be used like the use of computer by teachers and educators which based on the effectiveness of teachers on how to use computer. Result from this investigation shows that innovation teaching methods are more effective than the old methods in enhancing cognitive achievement in secondary schools. (Obene 2016).
1.3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The use of computer is relatively a new phenomenon in Nigeria. The use of computer is reflected in many areas of human activities, including secondary school programs. However, the use of computer in educational sector calls for teachers to be computer literate. It shows that many teachers shy away from being computer literate and computer is regarded as all purpose machine. Computer literacy is demonstrated by the availability, computer utilization and content competencies in the schools as well as through teachers effectiveness. (Adekeyi, 2015)
1.4 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
the study aimed at examining the computer literacy of secondary school teachers.
1. investigate the level of computer literacy of secondary school teachers.
2. identify the problems militating against computer literacy of secondary school teachers.
3. to investigate teachers effectiveness on computer usage in schools.
1.5 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1. What’s are the factors that hinders secondary school teachers effectiveness usage of computer in itu local government area.
2. What are the problems militating against effectiveness teaching in secondary schools.
3. What is the level of computer literacy among secondary school teachers
1.6 RESEARCH HYPOTHESES
1. There is no significant relationship between computer literacy skills and teachers record keeping strategies in secondary school
2. There is no significant differences between computer effectiveness and the performance of secondary school teachers.
3. there is no significant difference in the job performance of computer literate and non-computer literate teachers in secondary schools,
1.7 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study will be of benefit to teachers who will find it necessary to update their educational status. The government will use these findings as a yardstick for planning the computer literacy program for teachers.
1.8 DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This study was restricted to computer literacy and the effectiveness of secondary school teachers in Itu Local Government Area.
1.9 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The study was limited by time as the timeframe to turn in this study was too short to accomplish a more detailed research. secondly financial limitations made the research to be restricted to some schools within the locality of the researcher and so the findings and outcome of the research may not provide an authoritative basis for necessary intervention.
1.10 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This research finding aimed at targeting the problems faced by secondary school teachers on computer usage in selected schools in Itu Local Government Area.
1.11 DEFINITION OF TERMS
Computer is a programmable electronic device that accepts data, process data into meaningful form called information and store the resulting information for future use.
