CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.0Introduction
Nothing optimizes modern life better than the computer for better or worse. Computer has infiltrated every aspect of our society today, computer are capable of handling many of the repetitive task that are time consuming is what motivated the computer scientist to think on the idea of designing a system in a specific field or discipline to solve problems.
Automated exam photo card system attempt to produce examination photo cards for the main purpose of identity as well as eradicating impersonation. The design of the photo card for the needs to be improved to match up with the current trends of modern design. Some of the problems associated with the old design include: Discoloring of Exam photo cards which is printed in black and white, disarray of look due facial posture or snapping positions, inconsistency in the front views when compare to the person, no security features on the Photo card and consistency in line spacing, the exams department has no digitalized camera, card software and photo card printer, this department work in collaboration with the school portal in the production of the cards which the contract is given to an outsider this has led to the inconsistencies in the design pattern of the Exam photo cards.
Conversely computers are known to have much destination and it is the most important invention of the twentieth century. The oxford dictionary of current English defines computer as an electronic device which stores data, analyze it and produce information as required as the data input. In addition computer can be considered as an electronic device which as the capability of accepting incoming data into the memory holding it, processing it at a high speed to produce result accurately.
1.1 Background of the study.
Computer in the present generation has made work and operation easy the manual designing of identity cards is time consuming and tedious. It allowed the use of too many files, hence provision has to be made for extra storage rooms, moreover these materials (file, paper, passport and so on) are prone to various hazards and damage due to insect attacks, fire and so on. The photo card producer request information by consultation from a prospect student, waiting to take an exam such as surname, other name, sex, matric number and so on. All these operations are done on pen and paper. The automatedexam photo card system will take care of most of these problems inherent in the manual methods towardefficient and accurate exam photo card production process inKogi state polytechnic, Lokoja
1.2 Statement of the study
The statement of the problem is to design student’s photo card system for the examination purpose in various departments of Kogi state polytechnic, Lokoja. Where there is no effective means of identifying and checkmating the students for impersonation and examination malpractices.
1.3 Purpose of the study
The purpose of this project work is to design examination photo card system for Kogi state polytechnic, Lokoja, to increase accuracy in the photo card production process and record management of students and eliminate various levels of fraud. The
⦁ Output format are neat and can be presented in one uniform color and layout
⦁ Errors are easily corrected (there is provision search and update of student information)
⦁ Password control of user access.
1.4 Significance of the study
The study seeks to develop standaloneapplication software that will enhance exam photo card production in Kogi State Polytechnic, in addition this application software will minimize or totally eradicate error due to manual operation and cost of maintaining the manual system.
1.5 Scope and limitation of the study
This research work will concentrate on the automation of the student examination photo cardproduction process by developing standalone application software and using Kogi state polytechnic, Lokojaas a case study. The system developed will only cover registration of students and processing of student exam photo card.
The constraints that were highly against this study are: Financial predicament and inconsistency in the economic background of the institute. Also lack of the needed materials and time given to accomplish the task was toughly against the study.
1.6 Research methodology
This research is the process of arriving at a dependable solution to problem through planned and systematic collection of data, analysis and interpreting of such data and the numerous data obtained in the course of the research in both the primary and secondary methodology.
(i) Primary Research: This is the materials close to the subject of investigation and subject matter, Raw facts gathered through interview, observation etc.
(ii) Secondary Research: This is the material or information that was collected from other writer in related fields of study. These are text books, journals etc. From a part of this project research.
The materials used in the project are:
(a) Data capturing tools
⦁ Interview
⦁ Observing or literature review of records
⦁ Questionnaire
(b) Program tools
⦁ Low chart
⦁ Algorithm
⦁ Programming language
⦁ Visual studio
(c) System design tools
⦁ System flow chart
⦁ Input design
⦁ Output design
⦁ File design access method
⦁ Storage media and devices
(d) System analysis tools 1
Definition of terms
