IMPACT OF THE BANKING SECTOR ON DISCHARGE OF SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY BY SMALL SCALE BUSINESS ORGANISATION (A CASE STUDY OF TASHO ENTERPRISE AND LUWOJU HOTEL)

ABSTRACT:

This Research examines the Impact of the Banking Sector on Discharge of Social Responsibility by Small Scale Business Organisation with special reference to three Small Scale Businesses namely, User Point Ltd, Tasho Enterprise and Luwoju Hotel.

A Survey design was used with a well structured questionnaire. Respondents were selected based on simple random sampling technique to avoid biasness of selection. Thirty-three (33) staff were randomly selected from each of the organization.

Two hypotheses were formulated and tested with the use of Chi-Square analysis. The analysis resulted to rejecting both null hypotheses and hence accepting the two alternate hypotheses. Based on decisions of the tested hypotheses conclusions were reached that, the discharge of social responsibility by small business organization has significant effect on the performance of the organization and a hostile business environment is as a result of the neglect on the part of the small business organization to discharge their social responsibilities.

Recommendations were proffered to the organisations, SMEs, and the Nigeria Banking sector.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1      BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY:

The insatiable nature of human needs and wants makes the study of business and its understanding a must particularly in his modern sense.

Boone (1970) states that business exists for a purpose with each firm having a mission with the ultimate objective of creating utility and maximizing profit being the reward for the business object.

More often than not, the business is taken for trading commonly used by Layman. An average individual who is into trading is found introducing himself as a businessman forgetting the fact that business is all about continuity. Unlike trading which tends to terminates as a particular transaction is accomplished (Brooke, 1963). According to Fubana (1985) Business includes both commerce and industry and it is hoped that an understanding of the evolution of these two (commerce and industry) can give a letter insight into the meaning of business Fubana (1985) defines commerce as the art of buying and selling and the distribution of goods and services that gives satisfaction to the consumers. It is concerned with the removal of good from places where they are produced and in abundance to areas where they are needed.

Harrison (1975) sees business as an elastic but composite concept that covers the whole process l)v which desirable things are extracted from the earth surface and transformed lay man and machine through productive activities. It has both place and time utilities it has the human effort towards acquisition of wealth realistic through buying and selling activities.

Ajonbadi, (2000) in his book applied Management of the option that the need to take cognizance of all principle of ethics and morality is very much pronounced now than before within the business setting. The pendulum of the clock is winging am perhaps, rightly too. Ajonbadi (2000) for the states that a symbiotic relationship exits between a business firm and its environment which of cause is one of mutual benefit it is believed that only through such a relationship can a business only survive and proper increasingly, many factors are making business a socioeconomic activity and business is no more a mere occupation, but an economic institution operating in a social environment. It is expected to reconcile its short and long range economic interest with the demand of the society in which it functions critics have had to usage that it is hostility to business that explains the swage of demands for social quarters, as the success of the business system can best be said to have led to exaggerated expectants. Therefore, the increasing demand for the discharge of social responsibility is the price success recorded.

Ajunbadi (2000) sees social responsibility as an obligation beyond that which is required by law and economics expected of a firm to business while pursuing its profit motives and simultaneously be at benefit to the society. Business organizations perform this to be relevant in the eyes of the of the public and reciprocate the kind gestures of the society that patronizes it and ensure its survival it is the actions embark upon by management which may not he of instant benefit to the organization but ensure the creation of utility and guarantee social welfare. Small scale business which is seen as the cove of economic system it operates has overt or covert influence on its operation functionality. The business environment therefore must be understood from social, economic, political, cultural and technological bases.
