DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF WEBSITE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM

DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF WEBSITE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM IN AKWA IBOM STATE

ABSTRACT

The use of the Web-based application has many positive effects on education. It overcomes time and space limitations in information management in schools. Teachers and students are now using the Web-based application to access vast amounts of information and resources in cyberspace. Also, learning via the Web enables both synchronous and asynchronous communication. The web-based application provides teachers the opportunity to upload their student's results and access information from students when the need arises. This study was carried out with the aim of developing a website for an information management system for Secondary Schools In Akwa Ibom State (A case study of Holy Family College Oku Aka) This was carried out using a WAMP server with an extended PHP script, HTML, MySQL Database for storing of information. The software operates on the window 10 operating system platform. The web-based applications can be utilized in teaching computer courses in education. Recommendations were drawn that Holy Family  College Oku Abak should adopt a web-based and formation management system for accurate record-keeping and information management.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    Background of the Study

Many schools have their own system to manage students’ profile, information, learning materials, and assessing examination results. Common practice is by recording the student information in a record book. Students’ information is obtained from the registration and forms completed by the parents when they registered their children for the first time. This practice has some weakness such as the longer time to search the student profile, the possibility of misplacement of record book and vulnerability of student record to be accessed by unauthorized person.

In Akwa Ibom State public Secondary schools, a web based centralized school management information system using distributed database which stores all the school management information in a distributed manner, but executes centrally. Here, a student is able to  view all his educational information under a personal profile and is be able to analyze results based on different classes, students get educational information through this system and all the necessary information needed from school or board and so on, as well as more intensive applications such as web-based word processors and spreadsheet application.

Web-based application are user based, it can be download to view on the  desktop, but we cannot make any kind of changes to them (Ridge, 2016). A web application is any Computer program that performs a specific function by using a web browser and a sits clients. The application can be as simple as a message board, a contact form on a website, complex as a word processor or a multiplayer mobile gaming app that can be download to phone.

A web application relieves the developers of the responsibility of building a client for a specific type of computer or a specific operating system, which enable any one to use the application with internet access. This application can run in any windows-based operating system using web browsers including internet explore, fire fox, opera etc. Though some  applications require a specific web browser. Web application can be developed using a combination of server-side scripting (ASP, PHP,) and client-side scripting (HTML, Java Script)  languages. The client-side script deals with  the presentation of the information while the server-side script deals with all the storing and retrieving the information (Daniel, 2018).

Web-based  application entails the use of server-side script (PHP and ASP) to handle the storage and retrieval of information, while client side scripts (Java Script, html etc.) is usually previewed on a browser which renders the programme executable. A web application requires a web server to manage request from the client, application server uses database to store the information (Ndewa, 2016).

It is against this background that the researcher design and implement a website for secondary schools management information system in Akwa Ibom State.

1.2    Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study was to design and implement website for secondary schools management information system in Akwa Ibom State specifically this study sought to enhance:

1.    effective communication among staff and students in secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State

2.    Easy access to the administrative information by teachers and students.

3.    Enable the students to access the board result such as Js3 and SS2 examinations

4.    Provision of Educational resources for students and teachers

5.    It will help school administration to manage student profile and class to teachers manage students’ assessments, If transfer to another institution.

6.    effective dissemination of news and upcoming events of the schools in Akwa Ibom State.

 1.3    Significant of the Study

This study would be of immense benefit to students, teachers, head of schools, board supervisors and government.

Design and implementation of website for secondary schools’ management information system would help the students to access information from the board and their examination results.

The Website would help the teachers, principals and supervisors to access student profiles without visiting the school.

Teachers throughout the state will be able to share all their important educational contents with other teachers which can help to maintain equal standard of education all over the state.

The system will be able to prepare examination schedule for schools.

1.4    Delimitation

The study was delimited to the design and implementation of website for secondary schools’ management information system in Akwa Ibom State. The study would only involve Holy family College Oku Abak.

1.5    Definition of Terms.

ATML: Hypertext mark-up language. This is a scripting language for describing web document (web pages)

PHP: (Hypertext preprocessor). This is a widely used, open source serve scripting language and a powerful tool for making dynamic and interactive web pages.

SQL: Structured Query language, basically used in querying the database to retrieve updates and review database.

CSS: Cascading style sheet. A client-side scripting language use in styling the web pages for a greater user-experience.

Internet: The internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that use protocol suite (TC/IP) to link devices worldwide. The internet carries a vast range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents and applications of the world wide web (www), electronic mail, telephony, and file sharing.

Website: A website is a collection of related web pages including multimedia content, typically identified with a common domain name and published on at least one web server.

Information system: an integrated set of components for collecting, storing and processing data and for providing information, knowledge and digital products.
