A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF BROKEN HOMES AND NON BROKEN HOMES ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OREDOLOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA  

ABSTRACT

This research work is on the effect of broken homes on the academic performance of secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Different opinions and views of people on the effect of broken homes system can be eradicated on this area was reviewed. ten research questions were drawn and hypothesis was made. The researcher administered questionnaires to the people in the area under study, which serves as a major source of instrument for data collection, unstructured oral interview and personal observation, were also made. The data collected were then analyzed using simple percentage. The findings were discussed and summarized, conclusion was drawn from the research findings and this goes to show that broken homes on the academic performance of secondary school students system has a lot of problems in Oredo Local Government Area. Based on this finding suggestions were made by the researcher on how best to solve these problems.

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO STUDY

Having a good family background being with cohabitation is the basic for an improved mind set which may leads to good dusting, dusting therefore is a thing of the mindset is often influenced by family lifestyle, community lifestyle and associate personal life.

In the context of the project, we shell consider how communally life style or cohabitation influence offspring’s especially in the ordinary level of  education popularly known as  secondary school, suing Edo state as a region of study, with Oredo Local Government as an area of study, one of the lifestyle that is very obvious in this local government of this state is broken homes.

According to oxford advanced learners dictionary broken homes is define as a family in which the parents are divorced or separated. This act being from and extend to a community even to association. In  Oredo it has  become the  major barricade to the  growth and  development  of  children  in school .Many woman have given birth to children who have no father ,you  can  think of  how such  children will behave when they start school that is to say that broken is affiliated to indiscipline and sex lust immoral act  of some irresponsible men and women even adolescent young stars. This immoral act led to the dead of  many  innocent souls in abortion and abandonment in gutter and toilet. The servicing ones in school especially colleges  of   educations in Oredo Local Government Area, go through problem such as poor financial support, hunger, lack of self confidence, humiliation, fear of the disillusionment in the life among other devastating challenges.

As a matter of facts, students from broken homes in college of education of Oredo Local Government live a life style that portrait frustration .

You can see this in their appearances. A more view of them would bring many questions and idea to your mind, one of which would centre on the effects. 

 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

As a result  of improper  parental care, parental advice and counseling and rebuke the students are dull in learning, always struggling in class, poor physical outfit and disadvantaged, non hesitant in joining cult and bullying.

According to professions association of teachers the harmful effect of widespread divorce and single parents families in Oredo Local Government area is alarming. The demise of tradition family is creating a toxic cycle of school failure, poverty and crime. Many student struggles in class because they are brought up in chaotic home without married mothers and fathers.

PURPOSE OF STUDY    

        The purpose of this study is to restore human dignity and stability in the life of the college of education student who want to enhance good moral standard of living with self discipline. Also to point out dangers accredited to lack mutual understanding among couple with respect to traditional family life

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The study is restricted to effect of broken home on college of education student in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Because of the broken encountered in school by students from broken home, it is good for parents to live together with their family in unity.

RESEARCH QUESTION

According to the most recent documentaries, the standard of education in Nigeria especially the grassroots is meeting a positive discriminating the education system is set on imbalances.

The researcher is therefore ambitious to know the major cause of this great and public assault abeles against the nation “Nigeria” the researcher wants to find out the relationship between homes and falling standard of students performance in college of educations with preference in college of education with preference to OredoLocal Government Area of Edo State of Nigeria.

The researcher puts the imbalances in educational system of Nigeria as an influential lineament to Nigerian homes and expects to provide answers to the following questions;

-          Could poverty, indiscipline, emotional disturbances and abandonment lead to social and educational waywardness?

-          Are students in their early days in secondary school (i.e. junior secondary) encouraged academically by co-habitional parents?

-          What path does insecurity and unruly attitude of parents lead to in students (their children) career?

-          Does broken home add any adverse effect to the academic performance of colleges of education students?

-          What hopes does break home have for the nation and our education system?

-          What are the encouragements of the discourage students whose parents are not living together?

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Broken home: The term broken as used here is a home in which the separation or divorce between the couple children who lost of thr parents. Broken home, in other words is defines as a situation whereby there is a confusion, misunderstanding and conflict in the family setup as a result of divorce of the couple.

Family: The word family is used in this study to mean a group of parents and children living in one house.

Co-habit: A man and a woman together abandonment. The act of leaving a person, things or place with no intention of returning, their childhood abandonment by their mother.
