IMPORTANCE OF MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (A Case Study of Unilever Brother Nigeria Plc)  

PROPOSAL

This project will deal with the importance of management information system. Using a case of Unilever Brother Nigeria Plc. The research is various urged to shed more light on the great importance of effective management information system to Unilever Brother Nigeria plc, the problem of giving adequate information considered confidential to the organization is encountered.

The project will be divided into Five Chapters showing as follows:-

CHAPTER ONE:- will  give an insight into the objective of the study statement of the Problems, historical background of Lever Brother Plc. It will also give an insight of the organization chart of lever brother Nigeria Plc and same functional chart of Lever Brothers.

CHAPTER TWO:- will also focus on the concept of management information system, the frame work of a management information system. It will also include the problems with management information system (MIS)

CHAPTER THREE :- will show the definition of research methodology the research instruments, method of data collection, the importance of management information system and a suggested procedure for design of a management information system. There will be the elements of information system. There will also be the elements of information system design and the definition, terms and importance of  (MIS) to Lever Brother Plc.

CHAPRTER FOUR:- will be on data analysis and presentation and the methods of data on analysis. The objectives, benefits of MIS and the shortcoming of Level Brother Plc. And finally, the CHAPTER FIVE:- Which is final chapter of the project will give an insight into the summary, conclusion, recommendation, appendix, and the reference which is the final part and aspect of the project.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 INTRODUCTION

The ability to obtain and analyze a sufficient quality of relevant information is a key requirement for effective decision. Management information system should supply the basic information that a manager need in order to make decision. This move closely with the information provided is tallies with the decision-making needs. The better the decision that he will be made. This means that the designers of an information system information flows and by way it, and make it quickly available, decision process or greatly improved.

Management information system, when properly designed usually brings about changes system must be individually designed for each organization, tailor made for a particular purpose and objectives. In order to examine and painting the usefulness in denying management information system for an organization. I will like to take a case study of lever brother Nigerian Plc.

1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The aim and objectives of this research work is basically to study variables to be put into consideration in choosing and designing an effective management information system. The study also intends to make it clear to every manager and management executives that they are board to understand how an inflation system works as well as how to use it.

1.3 STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

As the research is variously urged to shed more light on the great importance of effective management information system to Lever Brother Nigeria Plc,the problem of giving adequate information as a decision for  disclosing necessary information considered confidential to the Organization is encountered.

Also the problem of finding text books and Journal that exhaustively treat the topic in question, management information system is countered for this undoubtedly sabers the research of her hope full identify and system solution to some or all problems associated with the designing of the management information system.

1.4 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF LEVER BROTHER NIGERIA PLC LAGOS.

Lever Brother Nigeria Plc (RCIIB) was established:- April 1923 as Lever Brother (West Africa) Limited; It is the oldest surviving manufacturing concerning in Nigeria today. The business as conceived by the founder “LORD LEVER HULM” was basically to manufactures soap using local palm oil over years, however, it has diversified into the production and marketing of non Soaps, Detergents, foods and Personal productions. However, Lever Brothers is a subsidy of the multi local and national company Unilever Plc. Its equally holdings are today 50.40% Unilever and 49.06% Nigeria Investors.

Through selected acquisition and mergers, the company  range of quality product is broad, these include Omo, Lux,. Oxbar, Ran, Close – up fresh, Esteem hair care range, Raslure, blue band, Breden, Hoslum, Royco, Lipton yellow label tea e.t.c. The top sheet branches are produced in four factory sites in Apapa the oldest Aba factory built in 1957 producing detergents. Agbara a food factory which was commissioned in 1987, and orgene the latest after the mayor of Unilever Nigeria limited with lever brother Nigeria Plc. And thus where the manufacturing of their Personal Products Boards is consolidated.

A major restructuring of the company was affecting in 1959 for more effective control and management the post of chairman and managing Director formally held by an individual was split. Thus on January 1st 1998 Mr. Felix Ohiwere was appointed chairman and Mr. R. E Clerk became vice chairman/Chief Executive. The company also changed from its directional structure to a functional one. Lever Brother Nigeria Plc. New functional directors of corporate relation/Personnel logistics, finance, Marketing Customer’s Service and technology duties. The present focus is towards a redesigned and improvement on the company’s  work culture engine system improvement. Taking the interest of its community. Public and shareholder very much to heart. The company does not have depot in state they only have regional offices and it is being divided into four (4) Zones.

Apart from the above objectives Lever Brother also aims to create employment opportunity is seriously having effect on the image of the country especially now that unemployment is seriously having effect on the image of the country. Youths, school leavers and the graduates would be adequately employed into the industries of different level. Also it seems to target high returns on investment over a stipulated period of  time.

Lever Brother Nigeria Plc as a business perform specific function and activities. The important activities of the organization are production personnel. Marketing and finance.

PRODUCTION FUNCTION

Broadly speaking, production are performed in creating goods and services. This, production management responsibility is divided in to broad areas. These are

a. Design of the production system which include product designs, process design, equipment selection, input materials selection plant layout and selection labour skill required, training Programme, schedule step of the plan, implementation  and constructing control systems. Implementing and operating control system. And modifying policies and design.

MARKETING FUNCTION

Being a marketing oriented organization, the marketing department is an important operating aim of level Brother Nigeria Plc, lagos. It activities begin even before the Production and continues after the sale is made Within the Organization. The marketing aims fulfill some important functions, which are activities that must be performed to more production from the company to consumer from research carried out, then such activities may be identified as follows. Production development pricing. Advertisement personnel selling, sales promotion and merchandising and financing credit and post sales transaction of all product of Lever Brother Nigeria Plc Lagos.

ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE FUNCTION.

Lever Brother Nigeria Plc. Maintain a sound financer management in order to achieve profitability .continuous survival of business can no longer pay it creditor to make any profit for it owners it simply fold up.

The financial concerns of the organization include those area of activities such as financial analysis financial planning 0r budgeting source of funds, short term and long term investment decision in short term investments or in long term capital assets working Capital management and divided policy.

PERSONNEL FUNCTION

In Lever Brother Nigeria plc, Lagos. the activities of developing and admonitory policies and programmes for providing an effective organization structures, qualified employees, equitable treatment. Advancement opportunities job satisfaction and adequate security are all personal functions.

It involves planning for human resources needs finding and hiring employees, training and compensating them and finally returning them. Major function area of personnel management are:-
